§ 5-26. Authority of fire chief; appointment of fire chief; inspectors; exemption from liability

  • (a) The fire chief or the designated assistants of the Block Island Volunteer Fire Department shall be the enforcing authority for purposes of this chapter. The fire chief shall be elected by the members of the department and the appointment shall be confirmed by the town council. While performing the duties under this chapter, the fire chief, or the designated assistant, shall be considered to be a town employee.

    (b) There shall be two inspectors of the local fire and rescue department, to conduct inspections for the placement of smoke detectors prior to transfer of title as per Public Law 85-332. These inspectors shall be appointed annually by the town council.

    (c) The fire chief, local fire marshal or any designated or appointed assistants enforcing this chapter or the state fire safety codes shall have relief from liability as set forth in G.L. 1956, § 23-28.2-17 et seq.
